Fertilizer Numbers And What They Mean
The numbers on a bag of fertilizer tell a great deal about what the fertilizer will do.
Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (N,P,K) are the ingredients in most bags of fertilizer
and are usually given in this order.
An all purpose fertilizer will have the three numbers the same such as 10-10-10, representing
equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
When looking for fertilizer, first decide the reason for your purchase.
If you are looking for plant, lawn or tree growth above ground choose a fertilizer with a high
first number (nitrogen). You'll get a great looking lawn and lots of leafy foliage on your trees.
A higher middle number (phosphorus) will encourage flower bloom a healthy looking lawn
and will stimulate fruit growth. Phosphorus will also help develop a healthy root system.
The last number potassium, is important for the overall plant health to handle various
environmental stress brought on by seasonal change.
More is not better, so be sure to follow the recommended dosage printed on the bag by the manufacture.
